The Lewis Chess Set - 'Scotland's Hidden Secret'
A must have for the Chess enthusiast. The legend itself will delight and intrigue. What better way to start a game of Chess!
The romance of the mystery of its discovery on a remote beach, perhaps near Uig on the Isle of Lewis some time before 11 April 1831, is loved by Scots and further adds to this land of mist, myths and legend. Is it true that they were found in a sandbank by a farmer who mistook the pieces for elves and promptly fled, then returning to retrieve them only due to his wife urging? Historian believe the pieces were probably made in Norway about AD 1150-1200. The Western Isles at this time were part of the Kingdom of Norway, not Scotland. The belief is that the pieces were buried for safe keeping on route to be traded in Ireland. The plot thickens…
The skilled craftsmen at Berkeley Chess have interpreted the iconic chess pieces to produce magnificent chess sets which exemplify the majesty of the original sculptures. Pieces are available in ivory & red, ivory & brown and a unique pewter & copper finish.
The exquisite detail of the design is brought to life by careful development of a silicon mold and a unique staining and polishing technique which emphasizes the fine detail of the original design. It's then further stained to add an antique effect. This results in an aged beautiful set that is eye catching and really stands out. They are well weighted with an improved ratio of crushed marble and resin. Each Piece is then finished off with the application of a protective felt base and presented in beautiful yet practical packaging.
