Harris Tweed is known as ‘The Big Cloth’ in Scotland because Harris Tweed will last you forever. Starting as a cottage industry, the canny islanders living on the Isle of Lewis and the Isle of Harris utilized the many sheep that wander freely to collect, dye, wash then spin and weave the wool into tweed to keep them warm. Many of the locals are part of the Harris Tweed industry and still make the tweed on their own looms, in their living rooms and garages and create the wonderful, colorful Harris Tweed that we know today. Harris Tweed is now a government protected industry and can only be produced in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. Make sure you look for the trademark ‘Orb’ which will be on all genuine Harris Tweed products.
