The modern Scottish home is welcoming, warm and bright, full of Scottish style. However, the small ruins that are scattered across many parts of Scotland remind us that in days gone by we often lived together under the same roof with our animals.Happily, nowadays they are more often seen warming up our kitchens on tea towels, aprons, placemats & coasters, or in our living rooms on tiles, pillows and prints. We do love our Highland Cows – or Heilan’ Coos as wee fondly call them – and our sheep. There is something very comforting about them. Perhaps that’s because in echoing our past, these beautifully designed items also reflect who we are today. Not long after moving to North America I discovered that it wasn’t easy to find these reminders of home and set about changing that. Scottish Creations was launched and now, thanks to our wonderful Scottish designers, we can all have a Heilan’ Coo or a wee sheep sharing our kitchen or living room again.Whether they are living in Edinburgh, Auchtermuchty or Newtonmore; the big city, the small village, deep in the Highlands or Islands, our independent designers make their homes in Scotland and we are proud to bring them to you.If you miss Scotland or know someone who does, now you too can create your own Scottish home.
When I first moved to North America, I was looking for gift that was distinctly Scottish but I couldn’t find something that was that bit different. I found many lovely traditional items but none of the new contemporary designer products that had been appearing in Scotland seemed to have made it over here. In Scotland, I’d become accustomed to seeing beautiful Harris Tweed Handbags, stunning sterling silver jewelry, fabulous hand-blown accessories for whisky, and lots of fun quirky items to brighten your day. I wanted these amazing designers to have a place to showcase their creations here in North America, and Scottish Creations was born.
We are a family business, a Scottish family through and through. Most of us, were born and raised in Glasgow, except my children who were born and raised in Linlithgow. We have got about a bit though and moved from country to country as us Scots do, but our family always took Scotland with it. As my Mum will tell you… “the Scots become more Scottish when they move away from home, and the longer they are away, the more Scottish they become”. It certainly seems that way, certainly for our family. Having lived in Scotland, England, Canada and now the USA, our family is a bit like the United Nations, spread all over the globe.

Anna Macneil is a Grandmother and Granddaughter small family team working in the Highland & Island of Scotland. Together they design and make a wide variety of products, using Harris Tweed, featuring designs which are inspired by the history, wildlife and landscape of Scotland.
Everything is designed and made by Ruth and her Granddaughter Rachael.
Everything starts life as scribbles and sketches on paper. The function of each item they make is as important as the aesthetics. Linings, fastenings, finishing techniques are all carefully thought out and tested. Their hats are designed to keep your head warm - and to not blow off in the wind!
Their products employ a type of embroidered decoration called appliqué. This involves cutting intricate shapes of fabric and laying them on top of the main fabric before securing them in place using their embroidery machines and sewing machines.
All the decorative buttons are also hand made mostly by themselves. Most are made using polymer clay blended and shaped to co-ordinate with the tweed and embroidery. Occasionally some are fused glass and these are made at a stained glass studio on the other side of Inverness.
Ruth weaves her own tweed and has a traditional Hattersley loom in the purpose-built loom shed beside The Workshop. You are welcome to call in, and whenever possible they are be happy to give you a demonstration of weaving in progress.
They do not use outworkers, so they can guarantee quality. Every item is individually made and hand finished by themselves, in their studio in Kirkhill, Inverness.
